Apple Turnovers

What you’ll need

4 large granny smith apples

1 large lemon

All Purpose Flour

Sugar

Brown sugar

Salt

Cornstarch

Vegetable shortening (Room Temp)

Unsalted butter (Room Temp)

Cold water

1 large egg

Vanilla Extract

Cinnamon

All spice

Tools you’ll need

Parchment paper

Pastry blender

Fruit peeler

Apple Corer

Rolling pin

Pastry bag

Pastry brush

Making the Crust

Step 1-Add 3 Cups All-purpose flour, 4 tablespoons sugar and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Stir all ingredients together

Step 2- Add 9 tablespoons unsalted butter (Room temp) and 9 tablespoons vegetable shortening (Room temp) Cut butter and shortening into the flour using a pastry blender.

Step 3- Add 1/2 cup cold water. Stir until mixture forms a dough. Place into fridge for 30 minutes.

Preparing your apple filling

Step 4- Peel your apples (Fruit peeler) Core your apples (Apple corer) To make sure core has been completely cut the edges to each of the apple slices.

Step 5- Cut each individual apple slice into small cubes.

Step 6- Rinse lemon, cut lemon in half, and squeeze 1/2 of a lemon into bowl with apple cubes. Stir all ingredients together.

Step 7- Add 1/3 Cup sugar, 1/3 Cup brown sugar, 2 tablespoons cornstarch, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon All spice, 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Stir all ingredients for 5 minutes. While you are stirring your apples will release their own juices.

***Preheat fire to medium high heat***

Step 8-Add 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter. Add apple filling. Let simmer for 3 minutes. Once done let mixture cool completely. It will also thicken as it cools.

Making the crust part 2

Step 9- Lightly flour surface of table. Add dough on top of table. Form dough into a small rectangle.

Step 10- Roll dough into a 22 inch long by 9 inch wide square. Once done trim edges off of dough. It will leave you with a 20 inch by 8-inch square.

Step 11-Cut dough into ten 4×4-inch squares. 4 inches long 4 inches wide. Remove any excessive dough.

***Preheat oven to 350 degrees***

Lightly butter your baking pan and place a sheet of parchment paper inside the pain.

Step 12- Pipe apple filling into each individual square.

Step 13- Take one of corner side of dough and place it onto the opposite side of the square. To seal the layers, press down with your fingers.

Step 14-Lightly brush each individual apple turnover with egg wash.

Optional- Cinnamon sugar mixture

Add 1/4 cup sugar and 2 teaspoons cinnamon. Stir.

Step 15- Place into a preheated 350-degree oven and bake for 40 minutes.

Step 16- After 40 minutes remove the apple turnovers from the oven. Let cool completely or until warm.

Serve warm and enjoy!
